Flatbed, or open deck trailers are used for a variety of freight. Commodities that do not need protection from the elements goes on a flatbed. Commodities that have an odd shape or that need to be loaded or unloaded from the side use this type of trailer.
Conestoga trailers, or curtain vans are also considered flatbed style trailers. We recommend this trailer type when the commodity does need to be protected from the elements and needs to load or unload from the side of the trailer and not the rear.
Odd shaped commodities and over-dimensional freight will all go on an open deck trailer. Tarps will be used, if needed, to protect your freight from the elements or to just keep it clean. Tarps used in the trucking industry are of a much higher and more durable quality than tarps found at the home improvement or hardware store.
The most common sizes of trailers are 48′ long or 53′ long. Regular flatbeds can accommodate freight that is 8’4″ tall, while a Stepdeck has a lower deck height and can take up to 10′ in height. Both are 102″ wide .
